| Your Salary |
Article 14, Salaries, of the Collective Agreement describes the procedure for determining salary for faculty. As well, Article 14.03 A 1 (a) presents the salary schedule for full-time professors, counsellors, and librarians, while Articles 14.04 B 1 and B 2 present the same salary schedule for partial-load professors.
As of September, 2002, the highest step is 20 ($75,809), while the lowest is 3 ($40,793). Your education and experience determine your maximum starting salary and your maximum step attainable.
See the chart in Article 14.03 A 1 (b) to determine your current salary potential. If your current qualifications won't net you the maximum salary, you may wish to consider enrolling in the ISTTP, the In-Service Teacher Training Program, which will allow any full-time or partial-load faculty member to achieve the maximum salary step.
The Job Classification Plans for Positions in the Academic Bargaining Unit on pages 131 to 133 of your Collective Agreement provide a detailed description of the factors (teaching and occupational experience, formal qualifications) that are considered in determining your salary. The method used for computing your initial placement on the salary grid is presented there as well.
Upon hiring you, the College enters your education/work data on a Salary Calculation Sheet which it subsequently sends to the Local 560 office for our records. By accessing and completing this form, you can calculate whether your initial placement was correct.
Sometimes, the college lists your educational credentials as "irrelevant", thereby negatively affecting your placement on the grid. We believe that this is an inaccurate interpretation of the Collective Agreement. Let us know if your educational credentials have been deemed "irrelevant."
As, well, if you think there may have been any other errors committed or would simply like us to review your placement, please contact the Local 560 office at (416) 495-1599.
Full Recognition of Accredited U.S. University Degrees |
On November 24, 2006, the Joint Educational Qualifications Subcommittee (JEQS) made the decision to consider degrees from accredited universities in the United States equivalent to Canadian University degrees - effective July 28, 2006. (See copy of decision ).
This decision will have a substantial impact on the salary and pensions of many faculty whose three-year and four-year American Bachelor degrees have previously been credited as only two-year and three year-degrees in salary-step calculations.
Only members with Step-20 credentials (i.e. a minimum of a 4-year Canadian University Degree or its equivalent) are currently entitled to the recognition allowance and will be allowed to move to Step 21 ($89,678 in April, 2007, rising to $96,529 in September, 2008). Others will be forever blocked at Step 19 ($84,944 in April, 2007 and rising to $91,434 in September, 2008)).
For those members that have had their three-year US degree recognized as only two years, the financial impact will not be as great but will still allow them to move to the maximum of Step 19 on the salary grid.
Therefore, if your U.S. degree was credited as less than the actual formal number of years of study, contact Nancy Jeffs at Employee Relations (416 491-5050, Ext. 7172 ) to have your placement and salary maximum reviewed and adjusted as appropriate.
Contact the Local 560 office or Gary Fordyce , the OPSEU co-chair of the JEQS, if you need further information or assistance.
